Consular Ball on Oct. 14 will honor Jehan Sadat Human rights activist Jehan Sadat, widow of assassinated Egyptian president Anwar Sadat and author of "A Woman of Egypt," will receive the Eloise G. Green bunny among scheduled programs Prof. Eduardo Kac of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, who created a controversial rabbit that glows green under blue light, will discuss his work during a symposium from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18, at the Chicago-Kent College of Law. "Art, Science and Free Speech: The Work of Eduardo Kac," a presentation on transgenic art, is sponsored by the law school's Institute for Law and the Humanities and the Institute for Science, Law and Technology. Other speakers are Stuart Newman of the New York Medical College, Christiane Paul of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and Chicago-Kent constitutional law professor Sheldon Nahmod. Through genetic technology Kac used a protein gene of the jellyfish on a living rabbit to develop "GFP Bunny," an artistic statement that has generated public debate. Holder of the Friends of Joe Jemail Regents Chair at the law school, Markovits will speak on "Law and Remembering: Socialism in East Germany and Its Impact Today." She has law degrees from Free University in Berlin and Yale Law School, and has been a visiting professor this year at Fordham University Law School. Loyola adds professor Implementation of the Institute for Consumer Antitrust Studies at the Loyola University School of Law will be directed this fall by Spencer Weber Waller, who has joined the faculty as a professor of law. Waller was an associate dean and professor at Brooklyn Law School and co-director of its Center for International Business Law. Among his four published books is the third edition of "Antitrust and American Business Abroad." A former clerk in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit who practiced with Freeborn & Peters in Chicago, Waller has taught at the Chicago-Kent College of Law and DePaul University College of Law. In January, he will become chair of the Antitrust Section of the Association of American Law Schools. He serves on the board of advisors of the American Antitrust Institute and the BNA Antitrust and Trade Regulation Reporter. Scholars recognized Three June graduates of The John Marshall Law School have received scholarships. They are: Paul Serkland, the $25,000 Lucy Sprague Scholarship provided by the parents of a law student murdered in 1998 to retire law school loans. Serkland has joined the Cook County state's attorney's office, where he had been a volunteer in the Gang Crimes Unit and Felony Trial Division. He is the son of Chicago attorney James Serkland. Joy Tolbert Nelson, the $5,000 Elmer Kissane Scholarship in memory of a former assistant Cook County state's attorney. A summer minority intern with Presiding Judge Thomas Fitzgerald of the Cook County Criminal Division, she has joined the state's attorney's office. Ernie Burden, the $5,000 William E. Peterson Memorial Scholarship named for a former John Marshall trustee who was president of the Cook County Bar Association and National Bar Association. Burden also earned the Dean's Prize for greatest progress from beginning to end of his law studies, during which he received the Edward D. Rosenberg Memorial Student Aid Award and the Allen H. Schwartz Scholarship (twice). He plans to practice in Chicago. Patients get laptops Children spending extended time at Ronald McDonald House in Chicago after surgery or medical treatments now have the use of laptop computers loaded with games, thanks to a student at The John Marshall Law School. Amy Kloempkin has established "Get Well Gigabytes," a not-for-profit organization that accepts used laptops, cleans out their files and installs video games and puzzles. Her first recipient was a 17-year-old who was hospitalized for 40 days for bone marrow transplants. The recipient of a John Marshall Distinguished Service Award, Kloempkin last year was president of the student chapter of the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity and vice president of the Intellectual Property Law Society. SIU prof gets grant Law Prof. Donald W. Garner of Southern Illinois University has received a third grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to continue his legal battle to protect children from the effects of tobacco and alcohol advertising. The $100,000 grant will allow Garner to file up to four amicus briefs in federal appeals cases involving substance regulations, and to help create a model ordinance for municipalities to restrain advertising. |
