Domestic violence program is May 4 at Oakton College The Cook County Circuit Court and 2nd Municipal District Family Violence Coordinating Council will conduct a domestic violence symposium from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, May 4, at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road, DesPlaines. U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Evanston will be the keynote speaker at the symposium, "More Reflections on Domestic Violence: The Helping Strategies," for professionals and community domestic violence advocates. A panel of experts will join a domestic violence survivor in tracing her experiences as a means of teaching the strategies that can work for clients, families and communities. Workshops will include therapy for batterers and working with immigrant domestic violence survivors. The symposium fee of $15 includes luncheon. Recent appointments Elmhurst attorney George J. Sotos, chief of the Illinois attorney general's Government Representation Division since 1995, has been appointed an associate judge of the 18th Circuit. A 1972 graduate of the Chicago-Kent College of Law, he is a former chief of the DuPage County state's attorney's Civil Division. Albert E. Radcliffe of Bartlett has been appointed jury commissioner for the 18th Circuit. An officer and consultant in the banking industry for 39 years, he succeeds Fred A. Messerschmidt, who retired in February. ISBA past president Cheryl I. Niro of Quinlan & Crisham, Chicago, will serve on the nine-member Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission Review Board until Dec. 31, 2003. She replaces Robert J. Downing, who served for 11 years. Ronald D. Sutter of Querry & Harrow, Wheaton, is a new member of the Supreme Court Character and Fitness Committee. He is a former assistant DuPage County state's attorney.
Criminal defense lawyers review electronic courts "The Electronic Courtroom: Defending Your Clients in the Modern Age" is the title of a seminar that the Illinois Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Federal Defender Program for the Central District will present Thursday, May 3, at Starved Rock Lodge, Utica. Scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., followed by a reception, the program will open with introductions by Jonathan E. Hawley, Appellate Division chief in the Peoria office of the federal defender. Judge Jeanne E. Scott of U.S. District Court for the Central District will speak at 9:45 a.m. on The Electronic Courtroom and the Rules of Evidence: Problems and Solutions. Michael Arendas Former Chicago attorney Michael W. Arendas died March 22 at age 63 of heart failure in his Wheatfield, Ind. home. A graduate of the Chicago-Kent College of Law after service as a Marine Corps sergeant, he worked for the state welfare department for 28 years. Mr. Arendas retired in 1992 as manager of Cook County child support enforcement and moved to Indiana. He was elected a town judge in 1995. David Thompson Chicago attorney David A. Thompson, a resident of Bartlett, died in March at age 61. A 1971 graduate of the Chicago-Kent College of Law, he was an assistant legal adviser for the Illinois State Board of Education for 30 years. |
