Ranney Jr., a partner in Mayer, Brown & Platt, Chicago, received an honorary degree from Lewis University during commencement ceremonies May 20. A graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, he is president of Chicago Metropolis 2020, a leadership coalition to improve regional living and working conditions. * * * Retired federal judge Frank J. McGarr, of counsel to Foley & Lardner, Chicago, received an honorary doctor of laws degree from Loyola University during afternoon commencement exercises May 12. McGarr was honored for his lifelong commitment to the legal profession. He chairs the Governor's Commission on Capital Punishment and is a special master of the U.S. Supreme Court adjudicating a boundary dispute between Arizona and California. Scott Turow, an author and partner in Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal, Chicago, was Loyola's afternoon commencement speaker. * * * Northern Illinois University recently honored ISBA past president Cheryl I. Niro of Quinlan & Crisham, Chicago, with the Outstanding Alumni Award for the College of Law. Schaumburg attorney and surgeon Kenneth C. Chessick received NIU's Distinguished Service Award. * * * Miles J. Zaremski, a partner in Kovitz, Shifrin & Waitzman, Buffalo Grove, is president-elect of the America College of Legal Medicine and will become president in March 2002. He chairs the American Bar Association's Special Committee on Professional Medical Liability. * * * Larry Yellen, an attorney and investigative reporter for WFLD-TV in Chicago, received a Herman Kogan Media Award from the Chicago Bar Association on May 10 for a broadcast work titled "Aggressive Drivers." Bonnie McGrath, president of the Decalogue Society, received a Meritorious Achievement Award in the Kogan competition for a commentary, "In Circuit Court Races, It's Old Fashioned Politics," that was published in the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin. |

Juvenile justice issues aired in cable programs Two half-hour ISBA cable television programs on juvenile justice will be broadcast this month on Chicago Access Network Channel 21 in Chicago. "A New Approach to Juvenile Justice" may be seen at 10 p.m. Tuesdays, June 5 and 19. "Community Alternatives to Juvenile Court" will be aired at 10 p.m. Tuesdays, June 12 and 26. Panel moderator for both programs is Nancy Z. Hablutzel, a member of the ISBA Child Law Section Council, the Committee on Legislation and the Special Committee on Cable Television Programming. Panelists include Child Law Section Council member Catherine M. Ryan, chief of the Cook County state's attorney's Juvenile Justice Bureau. Others are Teresa G. McGinnis, an assistant state's attorney in the 6th Municipal District Juvenile Division, Markham, and Sharon Covey-Sink, director of Bloom Township Youth and Family Counseling and Related Services. Tours to Ireland, the Alps popular with members More than a hundred ISBA members and guests already have signed up for European travel programs scheduled this fall in Ireland and the Alps. Representatives of Global Holidays, the tour coordinator, will be on hand during the ISBA Annual Meeting this month to answer questions and take reservations. Coast of Ireland Nine-day tours in Ireland are scheduled Sept. 7 to 15 with departure from Chicago, and Sept. 28 to Oct. 6 with departure from St. Louis. Forty people have signed up for the Chicago departure, and 44 for the St. Louis departure. The price is $1,169 per person, double occupancy, plus $78 in government taxes and fees. Singles may sign up for $1,419 each. Included are round-trip charter air transportation on an Omni Air International DC10-30 non-stop to Shannon, Ireland; seven nights in first class hotels with full Irish breakfasts daily, and deluxe motorcoach travel with experienced Irish guides. Tour destinations include County Limerick at the head of the Shannon estuary, where every nook and cranny hold ancient castles, magnificent cathedrals and delightful medieval architecture. County Waterford reveals evidence that Vikings, Normans and the Anglo-Irish all have settled in the countryside during past centuries. The mile-long quayside is lined with blue, yellow, pink and white houses. County Kerry near the southwest coast is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and many colorful lakes. Historic Tralee is noted internationally for its Rose of Tralee Festival, and Kenmare is a sprightly market town with a panorama of hazy mountains.
