Murdered law professor taught at Chicago-Kent Thomas F. Blackwell, a visiting professor at the Chicago-Kent College of Law from 1997 to 1999, was murdered Jan. 16 by a disgruntled student at the Appalachian School of Law in Grundy, Va., where he had taught for almost three years. A 1986 graduate of the Duke University School of Law, also with a master's degree in philosophy, Mr. Blackwell practiced law in Texas until he began teaching legal research and writing at Chicago-Kent in August 1997. He also taught corporate finance, copyright law and law office technology. In May 1999, he left Chicago to join the faculty at Appalachian, a new law school where his friend, L. Anthony Sutin, was dean. Mr. Sutin also was killed in the shooting by the student, who had been dismissed recently because of poor grades. Themis Anastos Morton Grove attorney Themis N. Anastos died Jan. 7 at age 89 in his home. A Greek immigrant, he was a major in the Army Air Corps during World War II and a 1946 graduate of the Northwestern University School of Law. An assistant Illinois attorney general until 1955, Mr. Anastos became general counsel for the Cartage Exchange of Chicago, an association of about 100 trucking companies. He was a past president of the Hellenic Bar Association of Illinois. John Carey Assistant Cook County public defender John T. "Jack" Carey died Jan. 6 at age 49 of cancer in a Chicago hospital. A member of the Homicide Task Force in the Felony Trial Division, he had been president since 1987 of the public defenders local of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. A 1983 graduate of night classes at the Loyola University School of Law, Mr. Carey had a master's degree in social work from the University of Chicago. He was a clerk for the public defender while attending law school. |
