Appellate Lawyers

Appellate Justices Allen Hartman and Patrick Quinn of the 1st District will discuss oral arguments and Rule 23 orders during a Friday, May 9, luncheon meeting of the Appellate Lawyers Association at the Chicago Athletic Association. Call (312) 554-2090.

Bohemian Lawyers

Champaign County Bar

ECI Women Attorneys

The annual retreat of the East Central Illinois Women Attorneys, "The Professional and the Personal," will be conducted Friday, May 30, at the University of Illinois Levis Faculty Center, Urbana.

The "professional" segment will include panels on inner workings of the courts, dealing with news media, and the law school environment for students and faculty. Topics of the "personal" portion are yoga, interior design, makeup and psychology.

Jackson County Bar

Jackson County Bar Association members will enjoy a free Fun Fest from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at the Von Jakob Vineyard in Pomona. Jewish Judges

Justinian Society

The Justinians presented a grant of $500 from its Children's Endowment Fund to the Child Welfare Society of Aurora at the April 17 meeting.

Kane County Bar

Pamela B. Strobel, executive vice president of Exelon Corp. and CEO of the Exelon Energy Delivery Co., will receive the Myra Bradwell Award for Excellence in the Profession, and Chicago Sun-Times columnist Michael Sneed will be keynote speaker.

Black Women plan May events

Two special programs ­ one on appreciation of the arts and one on developing leadership skills ­ have been scheduled this month by the Black Women Lawyers Association of Greater Chicago.

A Day at the Art Institute on Saturday, May 3, will focus on African-American women in the arts, beginning at 11 a.m. with a lecture, "Metropolis: Art in Chicago," by artist Terri Foster.

From 12 noon to 2 p.m., author Margaret Burroughs will sign copies of her book, "Life with Margaret," that may be purchased in the museum shop. From 1 to 3 p.m., participants will tour the exhibition, "A Century of Collecting," in the Rice Galleries.

On Friday, May 23, the association will convene a leadership forum from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chicago Athletic Association. A two-part program has been planned.

A panel discussion by African-American women leaders will include Cook County Circuit Clerk Dorothy Brown. Appellate Justice Shelvin L. M. Hall will be the moderator.

A luncheon will follow with a keynote address by Elaine R. Jones, president and counsel of the NAACP Defense and Educational Fund.

Epilogueweb

Thomas Roady: lawyer, judge, law professor

Thomas Golman Roady Jr. of Carrollton, a retired lawyer, judge and educator, died March 30 at age 84 in Jerseyville Hospital.

A lieutenant colonel in the Army Air Corps during World War II combat in the South Pacific, Mr. Roady became a major in the Air Force Judge Advocates in 1948 and retired in 1968 as a colonel.

An honors graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law in 1948, he received a master of laws degree in 1949 from Columbia University and began his law practice in Carrollton.

An educator for most of his legal career, Mr. Roady taught at the Schools of Law at Vanderbilt University and the University of Tennessee, where he was honored as Outstanding Professor of the Year.

Later the interim dean at the Washington University Law School, he was involved in establishment of the law school at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.

Mr. Roady also served as a judge in the 7th Circuit and was presiding judge in Greene County when he retired in 1989. He returned to practice with McDonald, Strickland & Clough in Carrollton until last year.

Benjamin Bass

Retired Chicago attorney Benjamin Bass died recently at age 90. A 1935 graduate of the DePaul University College of Law, he served in the military during World War II. He retired in 1999.

Jay Bellows

Retired Chicago attorney Jay W. Bellows died recently at age 92. Admitted to the Illinois bar in 1936, he served in the Army Adjutants Office and Counter Intelligence Group during World War II.

Mr. Bellows was past president of Congregation Kehilath Israel in Jeffrey Manor and past commander of the Pvt. Sam Neivelt Post of the Jewish War Veterans.

Joseph Gallagher

Retired Chicago attorney Joseph Thomas Gallagher, a resident of Oak Brook, died recently at age 83. He was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1952.
