A captain in the Army Judge Advocate General Corps after the Korean War, Mr. Shaffer was a principal in Sonnenblick-Goldman Co. for more than 30 years. He established the Jack A. Shaffer Co. in 2001 in partnership with the Trinity Investments Trust. James Simpson Batavia attorney James Michael Simpson, a Naperville resident, died recently at age 56. A member of the Illinois bar since 1974, he practiced in labor law litigation in Cook and DuPage Counties. Survivors include a sister, 16th Circuit Associate Judge Karen Simpson of St. Charles. Shawn Stumbras Shawn Stumbras of Oak Park, an attorney and former commodities trader, died June 16 at age 44 of brain cancer in West Suburban Hospital. He was a 1984 graduate of the DePaul University College of Law. Mr. Stumbras worked for the arbitrage trading firm of Stern Brothers & Co. from 1986 until 1988, when he became an independent trader. Two years ago, after his tumor was discovered, he left trading to practice law. Survivors include his wife, Mary Beth E. Cvengros, an attorney with the U.S. Small Business Administration in Chicago. James Tracy Detroit attorney James D. Tracy, a former Chicago resident, died July 22 at age 89. A veteran of service during World War II, he graduated from the University of Michigan Law School and practiced for many years with Dykema Gossett. Joseph Tuohy Retired Chicago attorney Joseph Payton Tuohy died July 27 at age 70 in his Streeterville home. A 1963 graduate of the Loyola University School of Law, he had served two years with the Army Counter Intelligence Corps in West Germany. Mr. Tuohy was an attorney for Greyhound in Chicago and Allied Van Lines in Bellwood before being appointed in 1988 as an administrative law judge for the Illinois Commerce Commission. He retired in 1995. Edward Vandenburgh Retired Chicago patent lawyer Edward C. Vandenburgh III, who was known as "Mr. Trademark" among colleagues, died Aug. 9 at age 87 in his Dubuque, Iowa, home of prostate cancer. A 1940 graduate of the Duke University Law School, Mr. Vandenburgh practiced in Sioux City, Iowa, and was a supervising engineer during construction of a government defense plant in Kansas City. After service during World War II as an Army staff sergeant with a railway operating battalion in Europe, he practiced with Swift & Co. in Chicago and obtained a master's degree in patent law from The John Marshall Law School before establishing his own practice. Chair of the American Bar Association Section of Intellectual Property Law in 1976-77, he was an adjunct professor at John Marshall and author of the textbook, "Trademark Law and Procedure." Mr. Vandenburgh received the Jefferson Medal in 1978 for outstanding contributions to patent, copyright and trademark law, and he retired from practice in 1981. James Walker James Tracy Walker of Anna died June 15 at age 54 in his home. A 1977 graduate of the Southern Illinois University School of Law, he also had degrees in criminal justice and social work. After high school, Mr. Walker enlisted in the Navy and was a corpsman during the Vietnam War. He later was a captain in the Army Reserve Judge Advocate General Corps. Admitted to the Utah bar, Mr. Walker was a trust officer and general counsel for the Bank of Utah for many years before returning to Illinois. Raymond Wallenstein Retired California attorney Raymond Wallenstein, formerly of Chicago, died June 3 at age 92. A graduate of the University of Chicago law School, he was a special assistant attorney general in addition to his 25-year partnership with Morton R. Field. During World War II, Mr. Wallenstein was a special agent with the Army Counter Intelligence Corps in Hawaii and Europe, where he received a Bronze Star. After the war, he settled in California and practiced for 60 years. |

Nadler, Pritikin adds two members Retired Cook County associate judge Francis A. Gembala and Chicago attorney Ken McNeil have become members of the family law firm of Nadler, Pritikin & Mirabelli. A 1972 graduate of the Loyola University School of Law with a master of laws degree in taxation from DePaul, Gembala was an assistant public defender for 10 years before his appointment to the bench in 1983. He was supervising judge of Domestic Violence Court for seven years. A member of the ISBA Committee on Legal Technology, Gembala has served on the Criminal Justice and Federal Taxation Section Councils and the Task Force on Domestic Violence. He is a past president of the Advocates Society. McNeil had been in private practice in domestic relations and mediation for two years after a three-year stint as director of real estate for the Chicago Public Schools. A 1985 graduate of the Harvard Law School, he was general counsel to the office of lieutenant governor from 1991 to 1994. Other recent additions to the law firm are Matthew C.
