Environmental lawyer signs book Feb. 17

Environmental attorney Peter Huber, a Harvard law graduate and senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute's Center for Legal Policy, will discuss and sign his new book during a Chicago reception on Thursday, Feb. 17.

"Hard Green: Saving the Environment from the Environmentalists" is called by William F. Buckley Jr. a "brilliant exploration of the ideology of environmentalism (that) takes the breath away by its ingenuity, intensity and polemic artistry."

Prof. Susan Bandes of the DePaul University College of Law has compiled an anthology of writings by scholars in law, theology, political science, the classics and philosophy to explore how feelings incluence the law.

"The Passions of Law," published by the New York University Press, contains essays that tell a "complex and emotional story about the places of emotions in the law," Bandes said.

Appellate Lawyers

Champaign Defense

Chicago Bar

Illinois Trial Lawyers

A seminar on "Evidence and Evidentiary Foundations for the Trial Lawyer" will be conducted Friday and Saturday, March 10-11, at the Sheraton Desert Inn Resort, Las Vegas, by the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association Education Fund.

Retired judge Scidmore was pro bono stalwart

Retired 18th Circuit judge S. Bruce Scidmore (right), who was honored in December by the Illinois State Bar Association, died Jan. 20 at age 79 in his Wheaton home of cancer.

During presentation of John C. McAndrews Pro Bono Service Awards at the ISBA Assembly meeting on Dec. 11, Mr. Scidmore was named a recipient of a Special Commendation for his volunteer work last year with the DuPage Legal Assistance Foundation.

Mr. Scidmore was an early chair of the DuPage County Bar Association's Legal Aid Committee, and in later years served in an "of counsel" capacity for the foundation, assisting in preparation of cases for indigent clients.

The specific contributions that earned him the ISBA award included devoting 40 hours to a client in a Kane County accident case. He had a judgment vacated, retried the case and helped prepare the appeal.

A veteran of service as a Marine Corps sergeant during World War II, Mr. Scidmore was a 1950 graduate of the Santa Clara University Law School. He had a general trial practice in California from 1953 until his admission to the Illinois bar in 1970.

He practiced in Villa Park until his appointment as an associate judge in 1977. Judge Scidmore retired from the bench in 1989 but was recalled twice during the past decade.

Cook County Judge Philip Fleischman

Cook County Judge Philip A. Fleischman died Jan. 27 at age 89 in a Chicago hospital after a heart attack a week after the death of his wife of 65 years.

Elected to the circuit court in 1970 after several years as a master in chancery, Judge Fleischman reached mandatory retirement age in 1985. He was recalled year after year to preside in his Law Division courtroom, handling multiple complex civil trials on a daily basis.

A 1935 graduate of The John Marshall Law School, Mr. Fleischman attended classes at night and drove a bread truck for Rosen's Bakery during the day.

A founder of the B'nai Jacob Synagogue in the West Rogers Park neighborhood, he was past chair of the Lawyers Division of the Combined Jewish Appeal. He was president of the 50th Ward Regular Democratic Organization from 1958 to 1970.

Survivors include a son, Northbrook attorney Marshall A. Fleischman, and two grandchildren: Jack A. Fleischman and Sidney Z. Fleischman of Fleischman & Fleischman, Palm Beach, Fla.

Joseph Abbell

Chicago attorney Joseph J. Abbell died Jan. 15 at age 89. A real estate investor and pioneer shopping mall developer in the 1950s, he headed the Abbell Credit Corp.

A 1934 graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, Mr. Abbell took post-graduate courses at the Northwestern University School of Commerce until 1941. He was a board member of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America and the Rodfei Zedek Congregation.

Thomas Ahern

Retired Chicago attorney Thomas D. Ahern died Jan. 8 at age 85 in a Franklin Park rehabilitation center. A 1942 graduate of the University of Law School, he served with the Army in Europe during World War II.

George Beall

Retired Chicago attorney George Brooke Beall, who was a partner in Baker & McKenzie, died in January at age 73 of cardiac illness. He was a 1953 graduate of the University of Chicago Law School.

James Beckely

Wheaton attorney James E. Beckeley died Dec. 25 at age 58 after an asthma attack. A nationally prominent securities litigator, he was a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Law.

A past president of the Public Investors Arbitration Bar Association, Mr. Beckeley retired recently from service as a public member of the Securities Industry Conference on Arbitration.

An arbitrator for the Chicago Board of Trade and the New York Stock Exchange, he frequently testified as an expert witness in securities and antitrust cases.
