Housing clinic helps clients

The Fair Housing Legal Clinic at The John Marshall Law School recently achieved a $10,000 settlement in a conciliation conference for a discrimination case involving a family and a landlord.

The complainants, a couple, charged that they were denied the right to view and apply for occupancy of a three-bedroom apartment in Oak Park because they have four children.

Law students Rolonda Mitchell and Sachin Shah, under the supervision of housing clinic attorney Tara Marie Alhofen, took the matter to the Cook County Commission on Human Rights.

The landlord agreed to complete a Fair Housing Awareness Training Course at John Marshall, to avoid discrimination in the future, and to include “equal housing opportunity provider” in advertisements for property sales and rentals.

The Fair Housing Legal Clinic represents people who have been denied housing in violation of federal, state and local rules because of race, color, national origin, religion, sex or sexual orientation, family or marital status, mental or physical disability, or source of income.
