Lawyers' Assistance Program, Chicago - $20,000. Funding to provide education, information, referral and peer consultation to Illinois judges, attorneys, law students and their families, who are suffering with emotional or chemical dependency problems.
Amy Schultz Child Advocacy Center, Mt. Vernon - $5,000. This organization provides advocacy and educational service to child victims of sexual abuse and their family. Funding will assist in transportation costs relating to attending court proceedings, counseling and medical examinations as a direct result of sexual abuse.
Illinois Institute for Community Law, Chicago - $2,500. Salary assistance for staff person to recruit and train attorneys willing to handle prisoner's rights grievances, and to assist families having legal problems resulting from incarceration.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sangamon County, Springfield - $5,000. This organization strives to foster a positive self-image, emotional stability and social development in children through on-on-one relationships with positive role models. Funding will be used to provide mentoring services to first time juvenile offenders in Sangamon County.
C.A.R.P.L.S., Chicago - $15,000. Salary support for a part-time attorney to staff the legal assistance hotline, advising low income clients on legal rights and locating appropriate resources for the client to resolve legal problems.
YMCA Youth in Government, Galesburg - $3,750. Sponsor state-wide judicial portion of the Youth in Government Program which allows youth attorneys to enter a training program on the judicial system, conduct local trials in courtrooms with an actual judge presiding, and prepare an appeal.
Cabrini Green Legal Clinic, Chicago - $5,000. Funding to create a Volunteer Program to address the need for legal services for the poor by recruiting, training and equipping known resources. The Clinic serves low-income individuals in Chicago's near-north area, focusing on housing, family and criminal law, and promotes reconciliation and positive change in clients' lives and the community.
Griffin Center, East St. Louis - $5,000. Salary assistance for two part-time workers to maintain after school educational programs and activities, and to conduct violence prevention programs for the youth in East St. Louis where the school drop-out rate, and crime, are extremely high.
Gads Hill Center, Chicago - $3,000. Fund Project Sanctuary Program which provides a safe place for court order supervised visits between children and non-custodial parent in cases of families split apart by domestic violence. The Center helps to strengthen and maintain the bond of both parent and child.
Okaw Valley Council Boy Scouts, Belleville - $5,000. Support the Juvenile Diversion program which provides positive alternative to formal court proceedings for first-time, non-violent offenders. Through structural activities such as community service, the program aims to reduce the recidivism rate among these youth offenders.
John Howard Association, Chicago - $5,000. Fund research, public education and advocacy efforts of public civic groups regarding problems in the criminal justice system with regard to youthful offenders.
Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance, Alton - $10,970. Funding to establish a state-wide web site submitted on behalf of five legal service programs in Illinois. This web site provides access to client education materials for legal service advocates, low income persons, social service agencies and private attorneys.
First Defense Legal Aid, Chicago - $5,000. General operating support for this organization that provides education on police practices and procedures, criminal law and civil rights to at-risk youth, and provides legal counsel to indigent parties.
Public Interest Law Initiative, Chicago - $3,750. Funding to assist this organization in studying the current pro bono commitment of bar members state-wide, and reinvigorate the pro bono culture in Chicago.
Guardianship Referral and Services, Decatur - $4,500. General operating expenses for this organization which provides services to individuals 60 years of age and older who have questionable decisional capacities.
Chicago Legal Clinic, Chicago - $5,000. The mission of the Clinic is to identify legal needs and provide community based quality legal services and education to the underserved and disadvantaged. This grant will offer salary support for attorneys in the Pilsen and Austin communities.
Illinois Pro Bono Center, Champaign - $20,000. General operating expenses for the Center's current activities which include the development of new pro bono programs in various downstate counties, continued support for existing programs, and coordination of the delivery of pro bono legal services statewide.
LifeSpan, Chicago - $7,500. Fund legal and social services to victims of domestic violence seeking orders of protection, divorce, support and complex custody litigation.
Cook County legal Assistance Foundation, Evanston - $5,000. CCLAF provides high quality legal services to low-income, elderly and HIV/AIDS clients in suburban Cook County at no charge. This grant will be directed to nursing home residents, under the age of 60, in cases where nursing homes are attempting to have the residents discharged.
Chicago Heights Community Youth Committee, Chicago Heights - $3,000. Support the Juvenile Diversion Project which offers alternatives to non-violent youth offenders referred by the juvenile court. The Center offers educational programs, field trips, tutoring and homework assistance.
Rock Island Children's Advocacy Center, Rock Island - $6,500. Support staff and training to conduct victim-sensitive interviews and elicit prosecution ready statements from children who have been victimized by child sexual and serious physical abuse.
Youth Service Bureau, Moline - $3,750. Salary support for a part-time staff position in the Peer Justice Program. Police refer juveniles to this program as an alternative to either taking no action, or routing them through the criminal justice system. The youth must admit guilt and his parents are required to be active in the process.
Illinois State Bar Association, Springfield - $2,500. Funding for the Guide to the Illinois Statutes of Limitations to be available on the Internet.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Chicago, Chicago - $3,000. Funding to recruit volunteer adult mentors, pay registration fees, advertise, and hire staff to conduct thorough background investigations. This organization matches under-privileged children with adult mentors, attempting to keep children out of gangs, out of the court system, and to teach conflict resolution.
Center for Disability and Elder Law, Chicago - $2,500. Salary support for a consultant to develop a computer communication network among lawyer volunteers for this organization which provides civil legal needs to low-income individuals with disabilities and to the elderly.
REBOUND, Waukegan - $5,000. This organization, in partnership with the community, is dedicated to directing at-risk youth toward productive and lawful lives through prevention and community corrections programs. On average, clients have had three to five offenses, and REBOUND is generally their last chance before lengthy incarceration.
Pro Bono Advocates, Chicago - $5,000. General operating funds for this organization which provides legal services to low income persons, victims of domestic violence, minorities, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.
