Arab-American Bar has annual banquet Feb. 21

After 17 years, the Arab-American Bar Association will hold its inaugural annual banquet on Thursday, Feb. 21, in the conference facility at Jenner & Block, Chicago. Illinois Supreme Court Justice Thomas R. Fitzgerald will be keynote speaker.
Cook County Judge William J. Haddad and eight other attorneys established the association in 1990, and Haddad became its founding president. Membership is now more than 150.
“The Arab-American Bar is grateful to Jenner & Block and ISBA President Joseph G. Bisceglia for their help in sponsoring this first-time event,” Haddad said. For reservations,  mailto:bhaddad11@aol.com.
In September 2001, after terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center towers in New York City, then-ISBA President Timothy Eaton, Haddad and other bar leaders held a press conference to condemn individuals and hate groups who sought vengeance here against Americans who look like Muslims.
“We are hurting just as much as any other Americans,” said Oak Lawn attorney Rouhy Shalabi, then AABA president and now its board chair. “For us to fall prey to terrorist acts makes us no different from the terrorists.”
