U.I names Solum to new post as associate dean
A new era began in the new year with the appointment of the first associate dean for faculty and research at the University of Illinois College of Law. Lawrence Solum, the John E. Cribbet Professor of Law and professor of philosophy, holds the inaugural position.
His responsibilities include overseeing faculty development and mentoring; coordinating lectures, symposiums and workshops; assisting in activities of scholarly programs, and serving on committees on promotion and tenure and appointments.
An internationally recognized expert on legal theory, Solum is the author of Legal Theory Blog and editor of Virtue Jurisprudence, an anthology on the relationship between virtue theory and the law.
During the annual meeting of the Association of American Law Schools this year, he will participate in a panel discussion of “New Originalism and Its Critics,” and present a paper titled “Zombies.”

The Chicago-Kent College of Law will present its inaugural Roy C. Palmer Civil Liberties Lecture at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, in the Judge Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Courtroom. A reception will follow at 3 p.m.
Professors David C. Cole of Georgetown University and Jules L. Lobel of the University of Pittsburgh will discuss their book, “Less Safe, Less Free: Why America Is Losing the War on Terror.”
DePaul clinic offers counsel for students
Students at the Lincoln Park campus of DePaul University can resolved routine legal problems with the help of part-time law student volunteers in the Student Legal Services Office.
Headed by Rev. Thomas Croak, a 1991 graduate of DePaul’s College of Law, the office counsels students in matters such as landlord-tenant disputes, minor traffic citations, city ordinance violations, and business contracts.
Limited representation is available in misdemeanor cases, Croak said, but not in court. Referrals are provided to competent volunteer attorneys.
Since the office was established in late 2006, it has assisted 86 students with “some notable success,” Croak said, including prevention of a student’s mid-quarter eviction from his residence.
Faculty news notes
Universit of Illinois Law Prof. Jacqueline Ross will be a Fulbright Scholar through June at the Higher School of Education of Cachan in Paris, France. She is engaged in a comparative study of undercover policing in Italy, Germany, France and the United States.

Former state legislator Rick Winkel is an adjunct professor at the U. of I. College of Law, where he teaches Public School Finance and Reform. In a recent session, guest speakers were former governor Jim Edgar and university past president Stanley Ikenberry.
Alumni are honored
Three graduates of the University of Illinois College of Law received Distinguished Alumnus Awards in November during a reception at the University Club of Chicago. They are Robert Benziger, James Matanky and Jeanette Sublett.
