Three young lawyers earn awards for legal writing
Kerry J. Bryson, past chair of the ISBA Committee on Corrections and Sentencing, is one of three winners of 2008 Lincoln Award Legal Writing Contest prizes.
Bryson, an assistant state appellate defender in Ottawa, took third place for the article, “Ask Me No Questions, I Will Tell You No Lies: The Use of Polygraph Examinations in Sex Offense Cases.”
The Lincoln Award writing competition for young lawyers is conducted annually by the Illinois Bar Journal Editorial Board. Plaques and cash stipends are presented to the top three participants.
In first place is Lafayette, Ind., attorney Nathan T. Kipp. His article, “Pleading in the Seventh Circuit After Bell Atlantic Corporation v. Twombly,” will be published in the February issue of the Bar Journal. He will receive $2,000.
In second place is Isaac J. Colunga of Shefsky & Froehlich, Chicago. He will receive $1,000 for his article, “Affirming the Bright Way to Determine ‘Good Cause’ for an Extension of Time.”
As third place honoree, Bryson will receive $500. All three will receive plaques on June 27 during the ISBA Annual Meeting at the Adam’s Mark Hotel in St. Louis.
The team of judges that reviewed 23 submitted manuscripts consisted of Appellate Justice Thomas R. Appleton of Springfield, Cook County Associate Judge Naomi H. Schuster, Christopher S. Haaff of Crystal Lake, Carey C. Gill of Carbondale and Robert “TJ” Thurston of Huntley.
